Tour Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1.

Tsagaan Suvarga – The White Cliffs

Depart early in the morning and head south toward the Gobi Desert. Arrive at Tsagaan Suvarga, a striking natural formation of white limestone cliffs shaped by ancient seabed erosion. From a distance, the cliffs resemble Buddhist stupas or the ruins of an ancient city rising from the steppe. Enjoy a scenic walk around the cliffs, taking in wide views of the open landscape and layered rock formations.

Accommodation: Tourist ger camp. Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2.

Yol valley in The Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park

Drive into Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park to visit Yol Valley (also known as Vulture Valley), a narrow canyon carved deep into the mountains. The shaded cliffs block sunlight from the valley floor, allowing ice to remain in places until early summer. Enjoy a gentle walk along the canyon, where steep rock walls rise on both sides and birds of prey such as eagles and vultures can often be seen soaring overhead. The contrast between cool canyon air and the surrounding desert landscape makes Yol Valley one of the most unique natural sights in the Gobi Desert.

Day 3.

Drive to Khongor Sand Dunes

Drive to the Khongor Sand Dunes, one of the largest and most spectacular sand dune systems in Mongolia. Often called the “Singing Dunes,” these golden dunes rise dramatically from the desert plain, reaching heights of up to 80 meters and stretching for nearly 180 kilometers. Along the base of the dunes, patches of green vegetation grow beside the Khongoriin Gol River, creating a striking contrast between sand and greenery. Enjoy time exploring the dunes with a gentle hike or climbing on the dunes. Visit a local camel-breeding family to learn about their desert lifestyle and enjoy a short camel ride, offering a traditional way to experience the Gobi landscape.

Day 4.

Bayanzag - Flaming Cliffs

Drive to Bayanzag, one of the most famous landmarks of the Gobi Desert. Known as the “Flaming Cliffs,” this is where American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews discovered dinosaur fossils and the first scientifically recorded dinosaur eggs in 1922. Explore the red sandstone cliffs and nearby canyons, and enjoy a gentle walk through the saxaul forest, a rare desert woodland of the Gobi. Arriving shortly before sunset offers the best experience, as the low evening light turns the cliffs a deep glowing red—revealing the true “flaming” colors that gave Bayanzag its name.

Day 5.

Back to Ulaanbaatar

Drive north to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a striking granite rock formation rising from the open steppe of Dundgobi Province. Known for its sculpted rocks, small caves, and ancient petroglyphs, this area is considered a sacred place by local people. Spend the afternoon exploring the rocky landscape on foot, with gentle walks among the formations and optional hikes to higher viewpoints for wide panoramic views across the steppe. It is also an ideal stop on the way back to Ulaanbaatar, breaking up the long drive with a memorable natural experience.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel. Meals: Full board

Drive back to Ulaanbaatar through the wide-open landscapes of the southern steppe. Along the way, stop at the ruins of Sum Khukh Burd. Nearby, a small and peaceful pond offers a chance for a gentle walk and, depending on the season, to observe migratory birds and learn about the history of the old monastery ruin. Continue the drive and arrive in Ulaanbaatar in the afternoon, where the tour ends.
