Erdenezuu monastery

Mongolia’s Oldest Buddhist Monastery

Erdene Zuu Monastery, established in 1586 by Avtai Sain Khan, is the first and oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. Located in Kharkhorin soum, Uvurkhangai Province, the monastery stands on the ruins of the ancient city of Kharakhorum. Enclosed by a fortress wall measuring 420 meters on each side and adorned with 108 stupas, Erdene Zuu is a significant historical and cultural site.

Historical Significance

  • Foundation and Expansion: Erdene Zuu was founded in 1586 on the remnants of Kharakhorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. In 1792, the monastery housed 62 temples, with Mongolian lords vying to establish their own named temples within its walls, symbolizing high status and reputation.
  • The Great Ger: In 1658, the largest ger (traditional Mongolian tent) ever built, consisting of 35 walls and 1,700 long poles and accommodating 200 people, was erected in the central space of the monastery's enclosure.

Architectural Highlights

  • Fortress Wall and Stupas: The monastery is surrounded by a fortress wall with 108 stupas, representing significant Buddhist elements.
  • Main Temples: The monastery contains three main temples: West Zuu, Middle Zuu, and East Zuu. "Zuu" is a respectful name for Buddha, and these temples house various images of Buddha, including past, present, and future representations, as well as images from different stages of his life.
  • Golden Stupa: Erdene Zuu is home to the largest stupa in Mongolia, known as the "Golden Stupa."

Cultural and Religious Significance

  • Communist Era and Restoration: During the communist era, Erdene Zuu was nearly destroyed. In 1947, the remaining structures were converted into museums, with Erdene Zuu existing solely as a museum. It wasn't until the fall of communism in 1990 that the monastery was returned to the lamas and once again became a place of worship.
  • Religious Revival: Today, Erdene Zuu is an active monastery, open to local believers and visitors. It serves as a place of worship and a center for learning about Mongolia’s religious and cultural traditions.
