A Traveler's Guide

Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake
- Origin and Features: Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, formed by the lava flow from a volcanic eruption, is 16 km long, 6 km wide, and 20 meters deep, covering an area of 61 square kilometers. It is located 2060 meters above sea level.
- Rivers: The lake is fed by the north and south Terkh Rivers, with the Terkh River being the largest of the ten rivers that flow into it. The only river flowing out of the lake is the Suman River, which means "Arrow" due to its arrow-like flow through the lake.
- Island: There is a small island in the middle of the lake where birds nest and lay their eggs.
Folklore
According to local legend, a mother and her son lived in the area and sourced their drinking water from a small fountain. After fetching water, the fountain needed to be plugged, but one day, the son forgot to do so and fell asleep. The area was soon flooded. The worried mother, seeing this, used the top of the mountain called “Uran Mandal” to plug the fountain, creating the lake. The top of Uran Mandal is the small island mentioned above.
Khorgo Volcano
- Location: Khorgo Volcano is situated on the bank of Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, 180 km from the center of Arkhangai Province.
- History: The volcano erupted 8,000 years ago, covering a vast area with lava.
- Landscape: The name Khorgiin Togoo, meaning "Khorgo's Cauldron," comes from the numerous cauldron-shaped depressions around the volcano.
- Interesting Sites: The area around the volcano features fascinating spots such as the Ice Cave, "Shar Nokhoin Tam" (Hell of the Yellow Dog), and the "Cave of a Person."
- Preservation: In 1965, 50 square kilometers of this area were preserved to protect its unique geological and ecological features.
