  • Uvgun Monastery: Built in the 17th century by Saint Zanabazar, this historic monastery is one of the main attractions of the area. It has a tragic history linked to the feuds between Western and Eastern Mongolians during the Middle Ages.

Historical Significance of Uvgun Monastery

During the Middle Ages, after the collapse of the Mongol Empire, Western and Eastern Mongolians (Dzungaria and Khalkh Mongolia) were embroiled in feuds. In 1640, the army of Dzungarian leader Galdan Boshigt noticed the golden roofs of the temples in Khugnu Khan Mountain and massacred the partisan-monks of the rival Zanabazar. They killed them by tying their necks with a rope, a practice referred to as "khognokh" in Mongolian, which means to tie like goats and sheep. This tragic event gave the mountain its name. After the democratic revolution in 1990, the monastery was restored by the granddaughter of the monks who once lived there.
