Bayan-Ulgii province, home to the largest community of Kazakh eagle hunters in Mongolia. Set against the dramatic landscapes of the Altai Mountains, this remarkable gathering celebrates the ancient tradition of eagle hunting — a deep bond between hunter and golden eagle that has been passed down through generations.

With its motto, “Promoting the cultural heritage of humanity – the art of eagle falconry traditions,” the festival is dedicated to preserving this extraordinary heritage while welcoming visitors to witness it in its authentic cultural setting.

What makes the Sagsai Golden Eagle Festival truly special is the experience beyond the competitions. Visitors can welcome Kazakh nomadic families as they arrive with their livestock during the seasonal migration, and even take part in assembling a Kazakh ger (yurt). These moments offer a rare chance to experience the living culture of Mongolia’s nomadic communities.

The festival is also known as one of the most photography-friendly cultural events in Mongolia. As a company specialized in photography expeditions, Ayan Travel organizes the festival experience with photographers in mind. Guests have the opportunity to observe and photograph eagle hunters, golden eagles, and nomadic life from close range, moments that are rarely accessible at other festivals.

Join our Sagsai Golden Eagle Festival Tour to experience the nomadic lifestyle and eagle-hunting culture while celebrating one of Mongolia’s most fascinating living traditions together with the local team behind the festival.
', 'excerpt' => null, 'file1' => 'Sagsai_eagle_festival_tour.jpg', 'file2' => 'Sagsai_golden_eagle_festival_tours_mongolia.jpg', 'alt_for_file1' => 'Sagsai_eagle_festival_tour', 'alt_for_file2' => 'Sagsai_golden_eagle_festival_tours_mongolia', 'days' => '5', 'price' => '1890', 'type' => 'tour', 'url' => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'CustomFields' => array() ), (int) 1 => array( 'Node' => array( 'title' => 'Golden Eagle Festival Mongolia Photography Tour 2026', 'slug' => 'golden-eagle-festival-mongol-altai-mountains-photographic-expedition', 'body' => '
This Golden Eagle Festival Mongolia photo tour is built for photographers who want more than just watching the festival. It focuses on real shooting time, better positioning, and working directly with eagle hunters in the Altai Mountains. The Golden Eagle Festival brings together Kazakh eagle hunters from across western Mongolia. Over two days, you can photograph fast action as eagles are released from mountain ridges, traditional horseback games, and strong portrait moments in natural light.

Beyond the festival, the tour includes private shooting sessions with eagle hunters in Sagsai and around Tolbo Lake. Instead of focusing on the decline of traditions and wildlife, we highlight successful conservation efforts. By sharing stories of resilience and preservation, we aim to inspire a positive impact.

Key Initiatives and Achievements

Ayan Project is committed to cultural preservation and nature conservation through impactful initiatives. From revitalizing ancient traditions to documenting Mongolia’s landscapes and nomadic heritage, our efforts help sustain and celebrate the country's unique identity.

The Eagle Festival Mongolia: Sustaining a Living Tradition

Ayan Project organizes the Sagsai Eagle Festival in Sagsai village, home to Mongolia’s largest community of eagle hunters. We chose this region to directly support and preserve this centuries-old tradition. Our goal is to ensure that eagle hunters continue passing down their knowledge and skills to future generations.

Through tourism, we provide direct economic support to eagle hunter families, helping them sustain their way of life. Visitors contribute by engaging with eagle hunters, learning about their traditions, and supporting the local community. This approach not only safeguards the practice but also strengthens the local economy, ensuring the tradition remains a vital part of Mongolia’s heritage.

Preserving Mongolia's Heritage Through Photography

Ayan Project is dedicated to documenting and showcasing Mongolia’s cultural and natural heritage through high-quality photography. Led by our company’s director, photographer, traveler, and author Batzaya Choijiljav, this initiative has produced a series of large-format photography books under the National Geographic name. These books not only highlight Mongolia’s stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife but also serve as a visual record of its nomadic traditions, ensuring they are preserved for future generations.

Ayan Photography Book Series

Snow Leopard: A Rare Encounter in the Mountains of Mongolia

Batzaya Choijiljav has ventured into Mongolia’s remote snow-covered mountains, capturing rare and intimate moments of the elusive snow leopard. Between 2024 and 2025, the project expanded into international publishing, culminating in the release of the English edition of the Snow Leopard photography book in July 2025. Created for international readers, photographers, and future travelers, the book presents rare, high-quality images captured during long-term fieldwork in Mongolia’s remote mountain landscapes.

Snow Leopard – A Photographic Journey Into Mongolia's Wildest Mountains - English Edition:

Snow Leopard is a fine art photography book shaped by a decade of fieldwork in Mongolia’s remote mountains. Created by Mongolian photographer and author Batzaya Choijiljav, the book grows out of a deep personal connection to the land and the quiet rhythms of high-mountain life. Rather than chasing dramatic moments, it presents the snow leopard as it is rare, patient, and closely tied to its environment.

At the heart of the book is a rare moment from the Altai Mountains, when three snow leopards appear together, briefly aligning into a single form with three heads. Captured after years of waiting, this image represents a way of working based on patience, quiet observation, and respect for wild animals.

More than a photography book, Snow Leopard offers a thoughtful look at coexistence between wildlife, landscape, and people, inviting readers and future travelers to see Mongolia’s mountains with greater care.

216 pages

Over 120 photographs

Rich infographics and field notes

English language

Released: July 10, 2025

Hardcover with paper jacket

ISBN: 978-9919-4966-9

Dimensions: 28.5 × 34.5 × 3.0 cm

Weight: 2.5 kg

Future Endeavors

The Ayan Project continues to develop new photography books and international editions while conducting expeditions across Mongolia to document its cultural and natural heritage.

If you are a photographer, an adventurous traveler, or a cultural explorer, we invite you to join our project expeditions. data-start="88">Chaimurat lives much of the year between the mountains, his horses, his family, and his eagles.

During the summer months, his family moves to their camp beneath the northwestern slopes of the Tsambagarav Mountains. Horses graze across the valley, livestock spread across the pastures, and visitors arrive throughout the season. Some come to meet a well-known eagle hunter. Others come because they have heard about the family's hospitality. Photographers, travelers, researchers, neighbors, and relatives all find their way there. Some stay for a single night, while others remain for several days.

For Chaimurat, this rhythm is familiar. It has shaped most of his life.

Like many men of his generation, he has spent much of his life around horses. Summer is when he prepares racehorses for local Naadam festivals, continuing traditions that remain an important part of life in western Mongolia.

Only after spending time with the family do many visitors begin to learn more about the man himself. The person pouring tea beside the hearth is also a former wrestler, a horse trainer, and one of the most respected eagle hunters in the region.

LIFE AT THE CAMP

Visitors who stay with the family quickly discover that eagle hunting is only one part of life here.

Tea is prepared throughout the day and bowls of rich Kazakh milk tea are constantly refilled. Beshbarmak and other traditional dishes are often prepared when guests arrive from far away.

While visitors sit together and talk, the work of the household continues around them. Livestock are cared for, meals are prepared, and sewing and embroidery are carried out alongside everyday responsibilities.

Chaimurat’s wife plays a central role in welcoming guests and managing the daily life of the household. Many visitors leave remembering the warmth of the family just as much as they remember the eagles.

EVENINGS IN THE ALTAI

As evening arrives, conversation often continues over tea. Stories are shared, neighbors stop by, and another day slowly comes to an end beneath the mountains.

Sometimes Chaimurat takes out his dombra and plays traditional Kazakh melodies. Family members gather together, visitors listen quietly, and the sound of the instrument carries across the valley.

These simple moments remain some of the strongest memories for people who stay with the family.

THE EAGLE HUNTER

As autumn approaches, attention gradually turns toward the coming hunting season. Eagles are trained and conditioned. Horses are prepared for long days in the mountains. Winter work begins long before the first snow arrives.

Chaimurat learned eagle hunting from his father and uncle and has spent decades hunting in the Altai Mountains. Over the years he has participated in many eagle festivals and won numerous championships.

Yet when he speaks about eagle hunting, he usually talks about the birds themselves rather than the competitions.

“Every eagle is different,” he says.

Some learn quickly. Some require patience. Some become excellent hunting birds while others never fully develop the necessary skills. Understanding these differences comes through years of experience.

RETURNING AN EAGLE TO THE MOUNTAINS

Over the years, Chaimurat has trained many eagles. Some remained with him for only a short time while others stayed for several years.

For Chaimurat, keeping a successful eagle forever has never been the goal. A strong eagle should eventually return to the mountains and leave offspring in the wild.

One of his most successful eagles won several championships before being released. When the time came, Chaimurat invited friends and neighbors, prepared a feast, and spent several days feeding the bird before returning it to the mountains.

It is a story he still remembers well.

Over the years, Chaimurat has trained many eagles. Roads have improved, tourism has grown, and younger generations increasingly leave for schools and jobs in larger towns and cities.

Yet the yearly rhythm of life continues.

Summer brings horses and visitors.

Autumn brings preparation.

Winter brings eagle hunting.

Spring brings newborn livestock and the beginning of another year.

When asked what eagles mean to him after so many years, Chaimurat smiles before answering:

“I cannot imagine life without eagles. Sitting and watching an eagle brings happiness.”

For visitors, meeting Chaimurat offers an opportunity to understand not only eagle hunting, but also the families, traditions, and everyday life that continue to shape the Altai today.

Learn more in our complete Golden Eagle Festival Mongolia Guide.

', 'excerpt' => null, 'file1' => 'Chaimurat_golden_eagle_hunter_tsambagarav_mountain.jpg', 'file2' => null, 'alt_for_file1' => 'Chaimurat_golden_eagle_hunter_tsambagarav_mountain', 'alt_for_file2' => null, 'type' => 'mongolia_travel_news', 'created' => '2026-06-08 00:00:00', 'url' => array( [maximum depth reached] ) ), 'CustomFields' => array() ), (int) 1 => array( 'Node' => array( 'title' => 'Golden Eagle Festival Mongolia – Complete Guide (2026)', 'slug' => 'golden-eagle-festival-mongolia', 'body' => '

The Golden Eagle Festival is one of Mongolia's most distinctive cultural events, bringing together Kazakh eagle hunters, golden eagles, horses, and local communities from across the Altai region of western Mongolia.

Held each autumn in Bayan-Ulgii Province, the festival combines eagle competitions, horsemanship, cultural performances, and community celebrations, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience one of the world's best-known eagle hunting traditions.

Today, travelers can attend two major eagle festivals: the Sagsai Golden Eagle Festival in September and the October Golden Eagle Festival near Ulgii.

Quick Facts

Festival Season:

September – October

Locations:

Sagsai (September) • Ulgii Area (October)

Province:

Bayan-Ulgii, Western Mongolia

Duration:

2 Days

Eagle Hunters:

Typically 50–80 Participants

Best For:

Cultural Travelers, Photographers, Adventure Travelers

What Is the Golden Eagle Festival?

The Golden Eagle Festival is built around a series of competitions that showcase the skills of both eagle hunters and their birds. Eagles are judged on their responsiveness, speed, and ability to return to their owners on command. These events showcase the close relationship between eagle hunters and their birds.

Traditional Kazakh Horse Games

Traditional Kazakh horse games form an important part of the festival program. This cultural presentation includes horseback riders, camels, traditional costumes, yurt building, craft demonstrations, and scenes inspired by nomadic life in the Altai region. It has become one of the defining features of the Sagsai festival.

Kazakh Music and Dance

Throughout the festival, visitors can enjoy traditional Kazakh music, dance performances, and cultural presentations that celebrate the heritage of western Mongolia's Kazakh communities.

Crafts and Market

Local artisans and vendors often present traditional crafts, handmade products, and regional specialties. Hotels, ger camps, drivers, guides, artisans, restaurants, and small businesses all benefit from the arrival of visitors during the festival season.

For younger generations, the festival offers an opportunity to learn from experienced eagle hunters and to take pride in traditions that continue to shape local identity.

Over the years, the festival has also introduced Mongolia's eagle hunters to an international audience. Photographers, filmmakers, journalists, and cultural travelers have helped bring global attention to a region that was once little known outside Mongolia.

Today, the Golden Eagle Festival remains both a cultural celebration and an important meeting point between local communities and visitors from around the world.

Can Visitors Meet Eagle Hunting Families?

Yes. One of the most rewarding aspects of visiting the Golden Eagle Festival is the opportunity to meet the people behind the tradition.

While the competitions are the most visible part of the festival, eagle hunting remains closely connected to family life in many parts of western Mongolia. Visitors often have opportunities to meet eagle hunters, speak with family members, learn about eagle training, and gain a better understanding of daily life in the region.

Many eagle hunting families have practiced the tradition across multiple generations. Parents teach children, knowledge is passed through families, and the relationship between hunters, horses, and eagles continues to play an important role in community life.

For travelers who wish to explore beyond the festival grounds, visiting an eagle hunting family can provide a deeper perspective on the people and traditions behind the event. He became a seven-time provincial champion haymaker and was later recognized nationally as a State Champion Haymaker. Yet when speaking with him, medals and titles rarely seemed important.

His stories almost always returned to family, eagles, and the values that guided his life.

More than anything else, Baitei belonged to a generation that remembered a different Altai — an Altai before tourism, before international recognition, and before eagle hunting became known to the wider world.

“My Son, Get an Eagle”

One story revealed more about Baitei than any list of achievements ever could.

After he married in 1949, tragedy struck the young family. Several of his children died in infancy, and he fell into deep sorrow. Seeing his son's struggle, Baitei’s father offered a simple piece of advice:

“My son, get an eagle.”

Baitei followed that advice.

Years later, he still remembered the change it brought to his life.

After acquiring his first eagle, he found himself focused once again on daily responsibilities. Caring for the bird, traveling through the mountains, preparing for hunts, and training the eagle gave purpose and structure to his days.

The eagle became far more than a hunting companion.

It became part of his recovery.

Whether viewed as practical wisdom, emotional healing, or simply the power of responsibility, the advice changed the course of his life.

For the rest of his years, eagles remained at the center of his world.

Not Everyone Who Carries an Eagle Is an Eagle Hunter

Among the many things Baitei shared was an old saying remembered by Kazakh eagle hunters.

“Are you an eagle hunter, or merely the man who scares the fox from its hiding place?”

The phrase may sound humorous at first, but its meaning was serious.

For Baitei, carrying an eagle on one's arm did not automatically make someone an eagle hunter.

The title had to be earned.

A true eagle hunter trained the bird, cared for it through every season, understood its behavior, hunted successfully with it, and accepted responsibility for its well-being.

Without that commitment, a person might participate in a hunt, but he had not yet earned the respect associated with the title of eagle hunter.

The saying reflected Baitei’s philosophy toward life itself.

Respect was earned through work, patience, and dedication.

Never through appearance alone.

As he often reminded younger hunters, tradition survives not because people wear the clothing or carry the eagle, but because they accept the responsibility that comes with both.

For Baitei, eagle hunting was never about image.

It was about commitment.

When Eagle Hunters Came to Ulaanbaatar

One of Baitei’s most remarkable memories dated back to 1950.

That year, Bayan-Ölgii Province celebrated its tenth anniversary, and a group of eagle hunters, including Baitei, traveled to Ulaanbaatar to participate in the national celebrations.

For many people in the capital, it was among the first opportunities to see Kazakh eagle hunters and their golden eagles in person.

During the event, the hunters demonstrated traditional eagle hunting techniques before large crowds. Live foxes were released, and visitors watched as the eagles displayed the skills that had been passed down through generations in the Altai Mountains.

Today, such demonstrations may seem familiar in an age of festivals, tourism, and international photography expeditions.

But in 1950, the event carried a different meaning.

It represented a tradition from Mongolia’s far western frontier being introduced to the nation as a whole.

For Baitei, the memory was never about personal recognition.

Instead, he remembered it as a moment when the eagle hunting tradition itself received recognition and respect beyond the valleys and mountains where it had long survived.

It was a reminder that the culture of the Altai was also part of the story of Mongolia.

Twenty-Five Eagles Across Sixty-Four Years

During his lifetime, Baitei trained and hunted with approximately twenty-five golden eagles.

He spent more than sixty-four years as an eagle hunter.

The numbers alone are impressive, but they reveal only part of the story.

Each eagle required years of care, patience, and dedication. Long before a hunt could take place, a hunter needed to understand the bird’s temperament, build trust, and develop a partnership that could not be rushed.

Every hunting season brought new challenges.

Winter conditions in the Altai Mountains were often harsh. Hunters traveled across remote valleys and mountain slopes, relying not only on the skill of the eagle but also on their own endurance and experience.

Over the decades, Baitei witnessed changing times, changing communities, and changing ways of life.

Yet the relationship between hunter and eagle remained remarkably constant.

For him, eagle hunting was never simply about catching foxes.

It was about maintaining a connection between people, animals, landscape, and tradition.

Each eagle eventually returned to the wild, bringing an end to a relationship that had often lasted for many years.

Then the cycle would begin again.

Few eagle hunters anywhere in the world can claim such a lifetime of experience.

For more than six decades, Baitei remained part of a tradition that linked generations of hunters to the mountains, valleys, and open skies of the Altai.

An Altai Before Festivals

When Baitei began hunting with eagles, the Altai was a very different place.

There were no international visitors, no organized eagle festivals, and no photographers arriving from around the world in search of dramatic images and cultural stories.

The tradition survived because families continued to practice it.

Knowledge passed from fathers to sons.

Young hunters learned through observation, patience, and years of experience in the mountains. Skills were earned slowly and often required a lifetime to master.

The Altai that Baitei remembered was quieter and far more isolated than the one visitors encounter today.

Roads were fewer.

Communication was limited.

Many valleys remained connected only by seasonal migration routes and local knowledge.

Yet the values at the heart of the tradition remain familiar even today.

Respect for elders.

Commitment to family.

Responsibility toward animals.

Pride in one's homeland.

For Baitei, these values mattered more than recognition or fame.

They formed the foundation of everyday life in the Altai long before the outside world became aware of eagle hunting.

His memories offer a rare glimpse into a period when the tradition existed not as a cultural attraction, but simply as a way of life.

<img alt="" Khongor Sand dune- Gobi Desert Tour

My favorite place visited is the Khongor Sand dune. The trips is organized to my expectation. It is just right. We have enough time to rest and interesting fovus to visit each day. Our guide is young, energetic and helpful. He takes good care of us during whole trip and has accompanied us in all the scenic spots. He has showed us the best things and let us try all the exciting things. I highly recommend this Gobi Desert tour with Ayan Travel.

Our Lifetime Memory of Golden Gobi Tour with Ayan Travel
This was a amazing trip we got to see all the places we hoped too and were truly impressed beyond our expectation. The tourist ger camp were all very good and we loved the variety. Barsbold and Tsigi made ther trip so special and memorable. Barsbold took all the stress out of our holiday. Sand dunes sunset and Yol Valley days we will never forget. We felt very well taken care of , the pace was relaxed and the driving was excellent. We would highly reccommend this 'team' and hope to meet them in Mongolia again. It would be nice to hear more history of some place such as Ongii Khiid, but Barsbold was very helpful in answering our questions and he gave us a unique perspective.

Our great journey to Khovsgol lake and Altai Mountains in Mongolia

The families in Western Mongolia near Bayan-Olgi province were such a nice people. I think our driver in Bayan-Ulgi was amazing. His name is Plan, Kazakh man and his knowledge of the roads and named families helped make it more authentic experience. Really enjoyed the homestay families and staying at the lake / Khoton & Khurgan/ Ger camps were also very nice. Western Mongolia was the highlight of the entire trip.

Kharkhorin is a beautiful city and the monastery was very special and spiritual

Kharhkhorin is a very beautiful city and the monastery was very special and spiritual. The warmth and hospitality of the Mongolian people are the best. spectacular scenery and wonderful history. Our guide Tuvshinzaya has an excellent command of English language. She also explained both current Mongolian traditions and ancient history. Very good job. Our driver " Gamba" was very professional and took care of our safety always. Both guide and driver worked together well as a team.

My favorite was the stay at the nomadic family near Hustai National Park
From start to finish this was an amazing trip. My favorite was the stay at the nomadic family near Hustai National Park. I feel that I got a very good impression of Mongolia and seen many of its beauty. Amara is an amazing driver/tour guide. She is amazing and very friendly. The second family we stayed at they were extremely accommodating and really included us in their daily activities which gave us a very good idea of what life in the Mongolian steppes is like. I feel very fortunate that I got the opportunity to see this magnificent country and amazing people. I wish I bought more gifts for the families. It would be good to tell the tourists in advance that it is nice to bring gifts from your home country. We only bring sweets. I recommend this trip to my friends. The trip as a whole was fantastic and the Eagle Hunting Festival was the highlights.
The trip as a whole was fantastic and the Eagle Hunting Festival was the highlights. Perfect, we liked being here. The hospitality of the people, the trip itself was magnificent and fantastic. We had a very caring and professional and friendly guide Puujee. He was very attending full for our needs.

An Unforgettable Adventure in Mongolia's Far West
Our trip to Mongolia's far western wilderness was an unforgettable adventure. The Altai Mountains were breathtaking, and the lakes in the region were stunning. The eagle hunter family was so warm and welcoming. Asiilbek, our host, was knowledgeable and friendly, and he introduced us to eagle hunting and his family’s culture in such a wonderful way.
We were amazed by the kindness and hospitality of the people in this region. The tour was well-organized, with everything we needed. The meals, cook, and driver were excellent.
Our guide, Tuvshe, was amazing. He guided us through tough weather and made sure even the smaller adventures were enjoyable. He was also very caring toward our daughters.
A big thank you to Doljo, the tour manager, for arranging everything so well and patiently answering all our questions.
This was a fantastic experience we’ll always remember!

Extreme Winter Tour in Northern Mongolia

What a lovely trip. My favorite place was by far Tsagaannuur. The landscape was beautiful and the accommodations were warm and welcoming. Anuka and her family have my thanks. Our guide Mona was wonderful and her history knowledge was A+. Our driver Batsukh was incredibly skilled and very kind.
The reindeer riding was of course highlight of the trip and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I would love to return Mongolia in the future for another tour with Ayan.

The trip was made Exactly as we wanted it, enjoying the Mongolian nature with some nice activities, Thanks to the ideas of Ayan Travel. Amara, you are were a wonderful driver/guide! You did everything to make our stay as passionate as possible, but also did your utmost best to give us the best experiences. Instead of easily activities at the cap, you drove us to the best spots for bicycling and horse riding. You took really well care of us. Thank you so much!
We have a feeling of warmth thanks to the Mongolia hospitality

The whole trip was excellent. Each region had its different characteristics that pleased me well. It is hard to choose between Gobi and Khovsgol Lake to Amarbayasgalant monastery. All places were excellent each with its own flavor. All places we visited are of outstanding beauty and all of them have their own charms. We have a feeling of warmth thanks to the Mongolia hospitalities and a pleasant excitement being in touch with the extraordinary beauty of Mongolian nature in Russian words: Образ красоты величественной, на всегда остающийся в памяти.
